Daily Living and Self-Care Skills San Diego
All Services
Daily routines can shape how independent and confident a person feels. Getting dressed, preparing food, brushing teeth, organizing a room, or following a morning schedule may seem like small tasks. Yet each skill can create more choice, control, and comfort in everyday life.
Alasi provides practical, in-home support for autistic individuals of all ages throughout San Diego County. Our Autism Independence Specialists support individuals with routines, hygiene, meals, household tasks, safety, communication, community participation, and regulation while working collaboratively with families.
Our goal is not to change who someone is. We build on each person’s strengths, preferences, communication style, and personal goals. Whether you are an autistic adult looking for more independence or a parent seeking support for your child, the process begins with what matters to you.
What Are Daily Living and Self-Care Skills?
Daily living skills are the practical abilities people use to manage their routines, care for themselves, and participate in home and community life.
These skills may include:
- Brushing teeth, bathing, and personal hygiene
- Getting dressed and choosing appropriate clothing
- Preparing simple meals and snacks
- Cleaning a bedroom or shared living space
- Completing laundry and putting clothes away
- Following morning, evening, or school-day routines
- Organizing personal belongings
- Using reminders, calendars, or visual schedules
- Traveling from home to a neighborhood store to make a purchase
- Practicing basic home and community safety
- Recognizing when to ask for help
- Managing personal care during changes in routine
Every autistic person has a different combination of strengths and support needs. One person may prepare full meals but need help remembering personal-care tasks. Another may complete a routine independently when it is predictable but need more support when plans change.
Alasi does not use a one-size-fits-all checklist. We focus on the skills that are useful and meaningful in each person’s life.
Autism-Specific Support at Home
General home care agencies may support many different conditions and age groups. Alasi focuses exclusively on autism.
Every caregiver, service, and support plan is designed around the different ways autistic people may communicate, process information, respond to sensory input, and approach daily routines.
An Autism Independence Specialist may support someone by:
- Breaking a task into clear, manageable steps
- Using written lists, pictures, timers, or other preferred reminders
- Practicing the same skill consistently over time
- Offering help without taking over the task
- Allowing enough processing time
- Adjusting the environment to reduce distractions
- Supporting regulation before or during a challenging routine
- Building choices into daily activities
- Celebrating progress without creating pressure
The right kind of support respects autonomy. Our specialists do not assume that one method works for everyone. We pay attention to what helps each person feel safe, understood, and capable.
Why Practice Skills in the Home?
Skills can be harder to use when they are learned in one setting but expected in another.
Someone may know the steps for preparing a snack during a structured activity but feel unsure when standing in their own kitchen. A person might follow a hygiene routine with one type of reminder but struggle when the schedule, products, lighting, or noise level changes.
Alasi’s in-home model allows daily living skills to be taught in the real environment where they matter.
That could mean learning to:
- Find clothing in the person’s own closet
- Use the washing machine in the family home
- Prepare food with familiar kitchen tools
- Follow the actual route from the bedroom to the bus stop
- Put household items in their correct places
- Complete a bedtime routine in a comfortable environment
- Traveling from home to a neighborhood store to make a purchase
Learning at home can make a skill more practical and easier to repeat. It also allows support to fit naturally into the person’s existing routine rather than creating a routine that only works during a scheduled session.
Support for Teens and Young Adults
For teens and young adults, daily living skills can strengthen participation, autonomy, and independence at home and throughout the community.
Support may focus on age-appropriate goals such as getting ready for school, packing a backpack, making a snack, putting away personal items, or completing parts of a hygiene routine.
Our specialists may also help a young person practice:
- Moving between activities with clear preparation
- Using a schedule to understand what comes next
- Choosing clothes based on weather or activities
- Participating in household responsibilities
- Communicating preferences and boundaries
- Recognizing signs that they need a break
- Asking for help in a way that works for them
- Preparing for changes in the daily routine
We work in a strengths-based way. This means we look at what a child or teen can already do and build from there. Support is not about forcing independence before someone is ready. It is about creating opportunities to practice while providing the right amount of guidance.
Talk to our teamSupport for Autistic Adults
Daily living support does not end at age 18.
Autistic adults may want help building new skills, maintaining established routines, or adjusting to a change in living situation. Some adults may be preparing to move into their own apartment. Others may live with family, roommates, or supported housing and want more control over their daily lives.
Alasi can provide nonmedical support with tasks such as:
- Creating and following household routines
- Planning simple meals
- Making a grocery list
- Completing cleaning and laundry tasks
- Organizing appointments and activities
- Preparing for work or community programs
- Practicing safe community participation
- Using public transportation or rides with support
- Managing transitions between home, work, and social activities
- Communicating needs to family members or support teams
Independence does not have to mean doing everything alone. It can mean knowing what support works, making informed choices, and having a voice in how daily life is organized.
Supporting Aging Autistic Adults
Aging autistic adults are often overlooked by traditional home care systems. Their routines, sensory needs, communication preferences, and lifelong experiences may not be fully understood by providers who do not specialize in autism.
Alasi serves autistic people across the lifespan, including older adults.
An aging autistic adult may need support maintaining familiar routines, adapting tasks as energy or mobility changes, organizing the home, preparing meals, participating in the community, or communicating with family and other professionals.
Our autism-only focus helps us provide respectful support without making assumptions about someone’s abilities or preferences. We recognize that familiar routines may be deeply important and that changes should be introduced thoughtfully.
Alasi provides nonmedical support and does not replace medical or clinical care. When authorized, we can communicate and collaborate with physicians, Regional Center teams, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, BCBAs, school teams, and other licensed professionals involved in the person’s care.
A Personalized Pace Without Pressure
Daily living skills are personal. Tasks involving hygiene, clothing, food, and private spaces require trust and respect.
Our specialists support each person at a pace that considers:
- Communication preferences
- Sensory comfort
- Privacy and personal boundaries
- Existing routines
- Energy levels
- Motivation and interests
- Family culture
- Current abilities
- The individual’s own goals
Some skills may be learned quickly. Others may take many small steps. Progress may also look different from day to day.
A successful day might mean completing an entire routine independently. On another day, success might mean beginning the task, making a choice, using a reminder, or communicating that more support is needed.
We value all meaningful progress.
Supporting Families Without Taking Over
Families often carry a large amount of responsibility for keeping daily routines moving. A parent may provide the same reminders every morning. A sibling may prepare meals or organize clothing. An adult child may support an aging autistic parent with household tasks.
Alasi can help create more consistency while reducing some of that daily pressure.
Our Autism Independence Specialists can practice routines directly with the autistic individual while keeping families informed. The goal is not to replace family relationships. It is to create additional support, encourage skill-building, and help routines feel more manageable.
With permission, we can discuss which help are effective, what environmental changes may help, and where the person is becoming more comfortable taking the lead.
